Jetzt mal im Ernst: Who's the masked man, anyway? Ze man behind zis blog? How could someone who mastered only two sentences of German in high school -- "Verzeihung! Ich heiße nicht Fritz" and "Stoße mit dem Kopf nicht an die Lampe!" -- have become a commentator on Germany for the Schau ins Land audiomagazine? Frau Lehrerin Schultz, wherever you are, ich habe es doch geschafft! Und ich heiße nicht Fritz, verdammt noch mal!
A brief history of how I reached this point from the West Side 'burbs of Cleveland, Ohio:
My first taste of Teutonia came in 1976, when I had my sputtering German overhauled at the Goethe-Institut in Freiburg. A year later, I was admitted to the Freie Universität Berlin. After wrestling "Germanistik" and "Slawistik" to a draw, I left in 1984 with an M.A., less hair, and homesick. In 1988, an American newspaper packed me off to the Münchner Merkur as an exchange journalist. My articles for its metro staff were the first I published auf Deutsch. Bitten again by the German bug, I set up shop that year in Hamburg as a freelance journalist and translator. In 1990, I joined the English service of the Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa), then flew the coop in 1993 to freelance, in English and German, in woolly St. Petersburg, Russia. From 1995 to 1999, I frolicked as a dpa correspondent in The Big Cabbage, aka Moscow. Weary of cabbage but with a Russian wife in tow, I returned to my old Hamburg digs in 2002.
So here I am.
